My first year!
Sundays in IITD as a 4th yearite is typically boring. You are already saturated with movies, tv series and places to hangout as you reach your final year. Acads pressure is at its lowest point (as you don’t care). You just keep switching between FB, Gmail or Gtalk all the time or you wove new dreams.
I am a 4th yearite too so you can imagine how terrible life is mine! I have nothing to do and have plenty of time (two contrasting situations). From few days somehow I have been able to control myself for most of the time by thinking about my past, the mistakes I made and what I learnt. I remember my 1st year most, the year when I entered with a spark to rock the IIT like you all have right now. I too spent most of the time of my precious 11th and 12th in studying for JEE and when I entered here at the first place I knew I am going to compensate all my hard work by doing everything and anything.
I also got few fundae’s from seniors that just be chill and cool and try to participate in as many activities as you can. CGPA doesn’t matter. If you have the post in any club (dramatized as the post of a CM or PM of the country) you are going to crack day one. I wasn’t a complete idiot though so I thought lets experiment for an year doing various things and then from the next year onwards I can make the CGPA. In the process of this experimentation, I screwed up my grades and it was high time for me to learn that 1st year CGPA itself decides where are you going to land after 4 years. There is this general rule that if your CGPA in 1st year is X then after reaching your final year your CGPA will be in the range of (X-1, X+1).
Well this was the hard part but luckily for me my batch was not a fighter at all and I managed to get into top 10% of the junta. And just because of that fact I was able to apply for MS/PhD and managed to secure first core job in my batch.
But saying this its my humble request that please keep your primary focus on acads and maintain good CGPA. Do maximum number of good projects if you are inclined towards a core job or higher studies. Its not that much difficult to score good grades if you change your perspective. Try to learn or extract whatever new information you can get from a topic. I know sometimes profs are really boring or you don’t like the course but you have to deal with them. I am sure in the end you will learn something from that course.
Good luck while you spend you time in IITD.
