Common Misconceptions about Mechanical Engineers

Common Misconceptions about Mechanical Engineers

Mechanical Engineering is one among the holy trinity of Engineering Disciplines. The other two of course being Civil and Electrical Engineering.

The following are the most common misconceptions people have regarding Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineers:-

1. Mechanical Engineers are not MECHANICS -

I`m just sick and tired of hearing this stereotype over and over again. If it weren’t for us, you’d probably not have anything you classify under luxury ranging from elevators to cars which make your daily life smooth as butter to nuclear reactors which will power our homes in future.  So stop dubbing us as mechanics and go and get your facts straight first; because

a) Mechanics is a separate branch of science in itself.

b) We do not repair stuff but create them in the first place.

2. Mechanical Engineering does not have Girls

I’d again repeat what I’ve said in the first pointer—->get your facts straight. I’ve seen girls equally capable if not more, handling a welding torch more surgically than any guy can ever imagine. Although for years together at a stretch, this stream saw a faint trickle of female students it is a steadily accepted choice of study today by girls, who I must add are getting more adventurous and want to compete on a level playing field with guys.

3. Mechanical Engineers do not have Girlfriends

In a world where Pigs fly, people travel on Unicorns, eat gold for lunch and use currency notes as toilet paper—-> Mechies will not have girlfriends

Fellas, Mechies despite barely having any feminine contact all through college, turn out to be the best boyfriends. You know what the best part about the aforementioned statement is, it was brought to my notice by at least 5 of my gal pals. Their reasoning being, Mechies cant cheat on them as easily as people from other streams, because Mechies have lesser opportunities. So, it was no big surprise when almost 70 % of  my batch changed it’s relationship status to committed barely a month after we passed out of Engineering school.

4. Mechanical Engineering is a Dirty Stream

As a matter of fact it is. Well, someone does have to do the dirty work right plus we have the balls to say yes, we’ll do it for you while, what you do is take a ‘I am Holier and Cleaner than Thou’ approach. On the bright side, we get to play in the sludge and also manage to get paid for it.

5. Mechanical Engineers build HOUSES

It is a slap on our faces when someone says that to us. I don’t know who started this stereotype and why. I think this particular misconception has been around even before the time my father did his undergrad in Mechanical Engineering, because he couldn’t stop laughing like a Hyena when someone said to him, your son is going to be building houses in 4 years time.

For the record guys, Civil Engineers build houses, we build Machines.

Guess that’s enough ranting for my first post.

PS: Absolutely honored to be a part of Lazy Us—> The title of the forum is probably the closest definition of my most noticeable trait. I`m pretty new on the blogging scene as well, so totally psyched to be a  part of this forum and to watch the fireworks.

Cheers !!!

  1. Lolz.. I too think that second and third misconceptions are actually true..

    :D :D :D

    • Well, I reckon we sorted it out now, didn’t we ??? :D :D

      • Not really.. :P :P I was only half convinced (bias are not so easy to get away with.. :P :P )
@my batch changed it’s relationship status to committed barely a month after we passed out of Engineering school.
You didn’t compare with other departments. What if I would say 25% of them change their relationship status barely a year after they enter their engineering school..

        :) :) :)

        • I’m not a lawyer, so not really blessed with the power of persuasion.

What are statistics after all, They are like miniskirts, they reveal more than what they hide.

Nice discussion. I agree with Abhishek. I have seen similar statistics which in a way support the heuristics that you think are completely non-sense.

If you see relative to other departments, maybe you would get better insight. :P :P :P :P :P

          • The idea behind this post was to clear out the misconceptions behind Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineers, so I have not taken into account the plight of other streams. Having said that, it would have given a clearer insight had I done so.

Thank you for your comment and input :)

    Nice post.

  3. lol…nice justification :) :)

but i guess the reason the difference between the various streams of engineering isnt clear is that not many people care!

Engineering is for the plum software jobs! Unless you’re one of those who’re genuinely interested in the core subject, it’s all one and the same!

Btw, you’re doing a pretty nice job as a beginner…keep the interest going n you’re up for a bright future! :)

    • Spot on Missy, People just don’t seem to care ; to them finishing engineering has now become Synonymous with landing a plum Software job. This mindset needs a shakeup for certain.

      Appreciate your inputs :)
